When packing your lightweight suitcases, how you pack matters as much as what you pack. The tips below will help you to pack your suitcase so it doesn't cause unnecessary trouble during your trip.
Pack As Lightly As Possible -- While underpacking can cause a lot of stress and problems during your trip, overpacking will just leave you figuring out how to handle more items than you need. When packing, a great rule to follow is to start with laying everything out on a table or on the bed. Then remove half of what you have out. Another smart thing to do is give yourself plenty of packing time. Time crunches tend to result in adding extra items and overpacking.
Do Not Fill The Case Too Fully -- It is possible that your suitcase could be subject to a random inspection by the TSA. If so, you want to make things as easy as possible. Having a case full to bursting makes it harder to inspect and to close afterwards, so avoid overpacking your case. Also, if you fill a case too fully and it ends up being inspected, some of the loose items in the case can fall out and become lost.
Conserve Space By Rolling Your Clothing -- To save some space and prevent wrinkles, roll your clothing instead of folding it. And if you roll your pants, shirts, and other things together as outfits, it makes pulling what you will wear out of your suitcase much easier.
Stuff Underwear And Socks In Extra Shoes -- When you pack shoes without stuffing anything into them, you waste a lot of valuable packing space. Also, if you don't want your personal items visible if your bag is pulled and opened for a security inspection, then you may prefer to stuff your underwear into your extra shoes.
Utilize Small Toiletries -- The TSA requires that liquid, gel, and aerosol toiletries are limited to 3 ounces each in containers stored in a single 1 quart plastic bag. Because of this, keep your toiletries as limited as possible. To avoid the trouble of filling empty containers with shampoo and soap, you can instead buy many different travel size products. Or, to pack even lighter, take advantage of the hotel's provided toiletries and leave yours at home. You won't have to worry about packing it or about bringing it back with you at the end of your trip, either.
